Handling Your Home's Water Supply

If you encounter a plumbing emergency, shutting off your home’s main water supply can prevent extensive flooding and water damage to your property. Your main water shutoff valve should be located near your water meter. Once you find your water meter, you will see the main water line bringing water in to supply your home’s plumbing. The main water shutoff valve is located between the incoming water line and your water meter. The shutoff valve may look like a knob or a lever. If your shutoff valve is a knob, turn the knob in a clockwise direction to stop the flow of water. A lever should be moved so that it is perpendicular to the incoming pipe to turn off your water supply. If you can’t find your water meter or your main shutoff valve, or if you have questions about how to turn off the water supply in an emergency, contact your plumber for assistance.
