Common Household Items to Keep Out of Your Drain

It is not uncommon for household items to be flushed down the drain because they seem harmless. However, it’s important to realize that drains are designed for handling water only, and even small or innocuous items can cause clogs that back up your home’s plumbing and cause problems. Common items that should be kept out of drains include paper towels, facial tissues, baby wipes, and feminine products. Even if these products claim they are flushable, dispose of them in a trash bin rather than down a sink or toilet. Additionally, never flush dental floss, cat litter, paper or plastic packaging, cigarette butts, or matches down the drain. In the kitchen, hot grease or cooking fats should not be disposed of down your sink. Although they are liquids when hot, grease and fat can quickly cool and congeal to form a stubborn drain clog that requires help from a plumber.

Are you concerned about sluggish drains or other home plumbing problems? Call Beacon Plumbing, Heating & Mechanical at (206) 452-4363 for 24/7 emergency plumbing services in the Seattle area. You can find out more about how to protect and maintain your home’s plumbing on our blog.

  6. We had to teach our roommate that you should not put any peels down the drain. He basically had put a whole orange down the drain and made it really hard to clean out. We had to contact a plumber to go in and fish it out for us.

  8. I remember when we were having plumbing problems with our toilet when my son was about four years-old. When the plumber finished fixing everything, he told me that someone had been flushing sand down the toilet. It turns out my son was shoveling up sand from the sandbox and flushing it down the toilet.

  9. What you put down your drain could affect your pipes. I have a bad habit of putting coconut oil down the drain after cooking. It has a really nasty way of clogging up your pipes. I think it may even make your pipes burst after it freezes. I'm not really sure what exactly made my pipes burst, but I should hire a contractor to come take a look at what else could be causing my pipe troubles.

  11. I have learned my lesson when it comes to taking care of a garbage disposal. I think it is really important to make sure everyone that is living in the home knows how the disposal works. If you don't you better be planning on calling the plumber on a regular basis. It is good to know what can and cannot go down the drain and why. It will save a lot of time. I would just try to throw away as much as you can in the regular garbage.

  12. I usually don't like to throw anything down the sink unless it is water. I almost always put those kind of things in the trash. I can't say much for my wife, her sink is always getting clogged. On top of the clogged sink, our heater hasn't been working that well either. I don't know what would be causing it but I should get someone out here to fix it for me. http://good-inc.com

  14. I am changing my standing shower to a tub. Will that necessitate a plumbing/piping overhaul? The faucet and all will stay in the same places. If I am just changing the compartment area, that is great to me. I just worried that the plumbing would be affected.

  15. This is a great list of things to keep out of your drain! There is nothing worse than having a clogged drain. I had one last year. No matter what I did, I couldn't clear the drain. I had to call a plumber to fix it for me. Ever since then, I have been very careful to keep my drains clean and unclogged. http://www.speedyrooter.com

  17. We refer our customers to your blog for what not to put in their garbage disposal. Our customers are clueless that they can't use their garbage disposal as a trash can, LOL! Their ignorance is our financial gain, however we don't gain & keep customers by not educating them so for that we are thankful for your educational blog. Feel free to read some of our write up at https://batylinplumbing.wordpress.com and please leave feedback on our articles.

  21. It seems crazy that people would flush items like dental floss, cat litter or cigarette butts down the toilet but it happens! People need to be more mindful about what they put down their pipes and keeping on top of cleaning them regularly if they want to reduce the likelihood of requiring emergency plumbing assistance. A little extra effort will save you a lot of money in the long run. http://www.heywoodheating.co.uk/

  23. I like how this article spells it out for you, on what should not go down the drain. I remember flushing an empty stuff down the toilet I know now I should not have. I imagine that that if too much of this stuff does get flushed, a plumber will have to come in and fix the problem.
