Tips for Cleaning and Maintaining Your Garbage Disposal

Most kitchen garbage disposals receive daily use, making cleanup after cooking and meals much easier. However, garbage disposals need regular cleaning and maintenance to ensure the mechanism and drain line remain clear. Maintaining your disposal is easy and requires only a few minutes each month to prevent clogs and other serious plumbing issues.

Clearing the Drain Line
Everything that goes down your disposal is transported away from your home through the sink’s drain line. Because food debris can easily build up inside the line and cause clogs, you should clear it periodically to prevent backups. To clear the drain line, plug the sink and fill it with two to four inches of cold water. Remove the plug and run your disposal until all the water has drained from the sink. If you do experience a slowdown in your drain’s performance, address the issue immediately. Use a plunger or a homemade natural drain cleaning solution to clear the clog.

Cleaning the Disposal
Your disposal uses a set of blades to chop up food into small pieces before it is flushed down the drain. Keeping these blades sharp and free of buildup will maintain your disposal and prevent clogs. To clean your disposal, fill the disposal drain with approximately two cups of ice cubes. Follow the ice with one cup of rock salt or white vinegar. Run the cold water, then turn on your disposal for ten to fifteen seconds until all the ice and salt have been cleared away. The ice and salt will remove debris from the blades and sharpen them as your disposal grinds them up.

  7. Keeping your disposal clean is so important, if you don't want your house to stink. Ill need to call a plumbing service because our disposal is having issues. For one, it has started to make the place smell funny no matter what you do to it. It also has been making a very funny noise. My kids think it is hilarious but there is definitely a problem here.

Sometimes the sink will fill up even though I just ran the disposal, so I think it could be full of buildup. I'll have to look at it and get it cleaned out. 26. you will need to remove it before proceeding with the cleaning process. First, it is important that you turn off the fuse that supplies power to the disposal unit. This is to ensure that it does not turn on during cleaning.

Use a pliers or tongs to remove the trapped object (you may need to shine a flash light down to see) , being careful to avoid damaging the grinder.
Avoid putting your hands down the garbage disposal if at all possible. If you do need to use your hands though, make sure to double check that the grinder won't turn on first. Flush with water. Simply flushing out the garbage disposal with water will help to remove any loose dirt or grime. Grinding ice cubes and salt in your garbage disposal is a great way to remove tougher sludge and debris that has attached itself to the grinding elements.
Scrub with an old toothbrush or scrub brush. It is also possible to manually clean the inside of your garbage disposal using an old toothbrush or even a scrub brush designed for garbage disposals.

I didn't know that you could just plug the drain, fill up the sink with water, and turn on the disposal which drains the water and cleans it at the same time. I will have to do that.

    1. Jim, you would be surprised at how many times, I go to a home and I hear the same complaint.
I was once hired to clean the drain lines in a home. The home owner was not there at the time I arrived. I called back to the office to ask if there was a specific drain line the home owner had in mind. The office said the home owner just wanted to get their drain lines cleaned. So, I tested all of the drains in the home. Most of them did not drain well. I surmised I was there to do a whole house drain cleaning.
I did the work. I had done about $600 in drain cleaning. The home owner called to inquire of why the bill was higher than she expected. I explained. She said, "Well, my husband did say all of the drains seemed much faster". She was not aware of how many drains in their huge home were actually not draining well.
In your case, you are aware of the drainage issue. You may need all of the lines cleaned. If that does not solve your issues, have the sewer ventilation examined. Maybe video inspect the vent before having the drains looked at. When you have so many drain lines in a home coincidentally not draining well, it very well could be the vent. However, there is no way to know where to begin: Vent or drains?

  39. Hi Beacon Plumbing and Heating.
It is great to see people actually using blogger as a means to advertise their business, while at the same time, giving something to the consumer.
One piece of advice I would like to offer for your article, here is to be aware of what your kitchen sink drain line runs to. Does it tie into city sewer, septic system or dry well?
A lot of states and cities and counties have bans on having a garbage disposal on dry wells or septic systems. If your state permits having a garbage disposal on a septic system or a dry well, be careful with the "rock salt" and "white vinegar" for cleaning your drain lines. It is true this is an effective method to cleaning drain lines. It even kills bacteria in the drain line. This is where one should be concerned if they have a septic system or a dry well. To kill the bacteria in the drain line would also mean creating a disaster for a leaching system. The bacteria in the septic tank and dry well are needed to break down and digest solids arriving there from the garbage disposal.

  40. Very interesting, I'm constantly using my garbage disposal and had no idea I should be cleaning it. I always thought I was supposed to reach my hand down in the drain, but I wasn't sure if my hand can even fit inside of it. It's good to know I don't have to put my hand down inside in order to clean it. I'll try out your ice cube method to see how it works, thanks for sharing! http://www.daysplumbingsupply.com/repair_parts.html

I need to use it when bits of food occasionally fall down my drain, so this will help me keep it clean and prevent clogs. Your method to fill my disposal drain with two cups of ice cubes with one cup of rock salt or white vinegar seems like it could work, so I should try it out. Is either rock salt or white vinegar better to use than the other? I have plenty of white vinegar, so I feel like I should know if it would be wise to get rock salt if it's better to use for my drain.
